Joanna and the Heroes
ALL THAT HAPPENED IS NOT GOING TO UNHAPPEN
(csstłtsndst)
Since Spring 2020 Joanna Leśnierowska (together with Aleksandra Bożek-Muszyńska, Katarzyna Sitarz and Janusz Orlik) has been working on a new project, whose premiere, scheduled for January 2021, could not (for obvious reasons) take place again.
Dialoguing and improvising with the current (literal and metaphorical) reality, the process, whose first inaugural session took place in fact in 2019, and whose concept has been evolving since 2017, has undergone so much transformation that it has already long time ago crossed the realm of various fields of art, practices and genres.
The disintegration of the world as we knew it and the process of tuning to it, dictates the rhythm and shapes.
What appears seems only a fragment – an apex of a drifting iceberg, whose monstrous mass (and history) disappears irrevocably under the surface;
Or, as mammal thrown to the seashore, it slips into the sand, revealing still less and less, although it seems to
move any second again.
What is being revealed today, in a moment will lose its form exposed to the inexorable influence of time and forces.
And the final form remains still unknown –
a riddle the solution of which will surely turn out as complex and blurred as the process itself.
Fascinated we observe uninterrupted carnival flow of
images, sounds, ideas and events, aware that
we have already found ourselves on road with no return
At the same time,
we cannot get rid of impression that we’re running in circles, or
we’re standing still.
Developed for nearly a decade, the practice at the intersection of visual and performing arts – the practice of perceiving and thinking with (moved) images – draws inspiration and strategies from contemporary painting and (post)photography in search of visual and physical representation for those emotional states that elude words and unambiguous framing.
It is said that to understand the world, one must first see, remember and recreate its image. Like through an “open window” of an image, we therefore keep looking. And if, as photographer Jeff Wall argues, art can’t change the world, we believe along with him that it can change us – those who look (and act) – and our relationship with the world. It is for this reason that we insist on continuing.
